Pearls are sensitive to chemicals. Care should be taken to prevent pearls from coming in contact with perfume, hair products, lotions, cosmetics or the like. The general rule when dressing is that pearls should be the last item put on and the first item taken off. After wearing, gently wipe your pearls with a soft damp cloth and allow them to dry on a soft towel before storing. Store pearls flat (rather than hanging) in a soft container such as a velvet lined box or satin pouch, and keep them separate from other jewelry to avoid scratches.
Once each year pearls may be more thoroughly washed in a solution of warm water and mild hand soap. Pearl necklaces or bracelets which are worn regularly should be restrung every few years. Wearing your pearls often allows the natural oils from your skin to enhance the luster of the pearls.
